Although the last bell of the school year has rung, the students of Prof. Filip Lukas Primary School from Kaštel Stari decided to continue learning beyond the school walls. Thus, around 20 students from classes 5.a and 5.b, along with their teachers Irena Bakić and Tihana Bilić Drašković, set off for Marina Baotić in Seget Donji on Sunday, June 23, 2024, after the atmosphere above their homeland had cleared. On the initiative of Mrs. Branka Gverić, the coordinator of general affairs and occupational safety at the Marina, they were invited to participate in an underwater cleaning action around the marina.
Members of the Sv. Roko Diving Club from Bibinje participated in this commendable ecological initiative. A small amount of trash and various waste was collected from the seabed and the shore, and the students themselves surfaced with a few "significant" examples. The members of RK Sv. Roko also prepared an educational session about mollusks and arthropods in the seabed, the main ecological problems in the era of mass tourism, and suggestions on how individuals can help. The students had the opportunity to observe and touch some species and learn more about their specifics. They particularly enjoyed direct contact with the living world and became more aware of the importance of preserving the marine ecosystem. After the educational session, the living creatures were returned to their natural habitats, and none were harmed during the process.
The students expressed a desire for further participation and received tasks for the summer to ensure that this would not be an isolated event. The challenge was enthusiastically accepted. They also received an educational booklet "The Noble Pen Shell – The Good Giant of the Mediterranean," highlighting another urgent ecological issue of today – the endangerment of the largest Mediterranean shellfish, a true ally in maintaining sea cleanliness due to its ability to filter more than 1000 liters of water daily.
They hope this is just the first action in collaboration with the local community as part of their Erasmus + project Eco Empowerment. Given that their school has a diamond status as an Eco-School, environmental care and education are imperative. They thanked the organizers for the invitation to collaborate and their willingness to share their knowledge with the youngest. They were received warmly and have become true allies in their missions.
